About the Book

Dhandha: How Gujaratis Do Business is a book that shows you just how the Gujaratis do their ‘dhandha'. This word means ‘business,' and as the author says, the only community who truly does justice in business to this word is the Gujarati community. This community is known for its skills in business and the author has portrayed this in her new book. The book showcases the lives of a few Gujaratis who have succeeded in their ‘dhandha'. The first one is Jaydev Patel, who started off as being one of the many New York Life Insurance agents, but succeeded in selling policies that are worth $2.5 billion and counting. The next instance is that of Bhimjibhai Patel, who is one of the wealthiest diamond merchants in the country and is the co-founder of the very popular Diamond Nagar in Surat.
Dalpatbhai Patel, a Gujarati motelier succeeded in becoming the Mayor of Mansfield County, while Mohanbhai Patel was once the Sheriff of Mumbai and a reputed manufacturer of collapsible aluminium tubes. Hersha and Hasu Shah are Gujaratis who own more than a hundred hotels in the US.
The author has left no stones unturned in scouting the glove to find stories of Gujaratis who have succeeded in their respective ‘dhandhas' and have left their mark in their field. The amazing business sense and determination that the community has to succeed, have been applauded here.
